Anxiety Q & A

What is an anxiety disorder?

Everyone has anxiety that isn’t related to a mental health disorder. Anxiety is your body’s natural response to stress, an upcoming event you dread, or a dangerous situation. This type of anxiety energizes your body and mind to meet the circumstance, then disappears.

Anxiety disorders occur when your anxiety becomes so persistent and severe it disrupts your ability to manage daily life. This type of anxiety often occurs even when you don’t face a known challenge.

People with an anxiety disorder often change their daily habits to avoid the places, events, or people triggering their fear and dread, even if that means skipping work or social events they would usually enjoy.

Can I develop different anxiety disorders?

There are different anxiety disorders, including:

Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD)

GAD causes nearly constant, daily worry over everyday situations and issues like money, work, and your family’s health.

Social anxiety disorder

People with social anxiety disorder may dread any social situation, whether meeting new people, eating in a restaurant, or needing to give a speech.

Separation anxiety disorder

Though best known for affecting children, teens and adults can also have separation anxiety disorder. This condition causes extreme anxiety when you’re apart from loved ones, often due to the fear that harm will come to you or them while apart.

Panic disorder

Panic disorder means you have unexpected and repeated panic attacks.

Agoraphobia

Agoraphobia causes an intense fear of leaving home, or anywhere you feel safe. You may also avoid situations where you can’t easily leave, may feel embarrassed, or may cause a panic attack.

What symptoms does anxiety cause?

Along with the symptoms unique to each anxiety disorder, you may experience:

  • Constant worry
  • Nervousness or restlessness
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Problems sleeping
  • Nausea and stomach aches
  • Muscle tightness
  • Racing heartbeat
  • Sense of impending doom or danger
  • Panic attack (chest pain, dizziness, sweating, shortness of breath, or rapid breathing)

Children often have physical symptoms like stomach aches and may refuse to go to school.
