Psychotherapy Q & A

What is psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy (talk therapy) is one of the primary treatments for the challenges you face in life, whether you need help with stress, family conflicts, a life transition, or a mental health disorder.

Dr. Zingher gives you a safe place to share your experiences, explore feelings, thoughts, and behaviors, and learn how to overcome challenges and improve your life. As your therapist, he guides each session, asking questions, synthesizing the information you share, and offering insight and information.

When would I need psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy can help you through any life transition or when you’re struggling to make an important decision. Many people seek therapy when they feel burned out or can’t resolve conflicts.

Parents may need therapy to learn how to manage emotional or behavioral problems in their children.

You will benefit from therapy if you can’t control angry outbursts, have low self-esteem, or struggle to socialize or build relationships. Therapy is also the gold standard for treating insomnia.

With or without medication, psychotherapy improves mental health conditions, including:

  • Trauma
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Schizophrenia
  • Personality disorders
  • Autism spectrum disorder (ASD)
  • Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)
  • Disruptive mood dysregulation disorder (DMDD)
  • Substance use disorder

This list isn’t comprehensive, so don’t hesitate to call the office if you face other mental health challenges.

What type of psychotherapy might I receive?

Dr. Zingher uses many different therapies, including:

  • Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)
  • Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT)
  • Psychoanalytic therapy
  • Psychodynamic psychotherapy
  • Strength-based therapy
  • Narrative therapy
  • Play therapy

Some therapies are time-limited and highly structured; others are like ongoing conversations to explore your feelings, thoughts, and experiences.

Each therapy takes a different approach, making certain ones more suitable for each individual. Here are a few examples:

Psychoanalysis explores your unconscious and dreams, while psychodynamic therapy looks at how past experiences affect your current life problems.

Dialectical behavior therapy heals strong emotions, finds solutions, and improves communication. Cognitive behavioral therapy identifies distorted or unhealthy thoughts and changes them to improve problematic behaviors.

Is telehealth psychotherapy as effective as in-person visits?

Dr. Zingher provides exceptional therapy through in-person and telehealth visits. The American Psychiatric Association (APA) supports telemedicine, citing studies showing that patients are equally satisfied with both options, and telehealth therapy is just as effective as in-person care.
